FERNANDO BELFIORE:

THE MARKET

A year after the No volveremos a la normalidad porque la normalidad era el problema or Movement study for THE MARKET, presented at Spider 2020, here comes Ecosocialism, A radical alternative to capitalist catastrophe or THE MARKET.

This piece rests on at least two fundamental thoughts: Joseph Beuys's statement that art has the power to change social reality, and Judith Butler's (via Bourdieu) statement that “practices are not unilaterally determined by the habitus; they emerge at the site of conjuncture between the habitus and what Bourdieu will call specific social ‘fields’ where the ultimate or ultimately determining field is ‘the market’.”

Belfiore and his team attempt to dig deeper into the topics of consumerism, the ruling of large corporations, and the accumulation of wealth. They work with counts and amounts: almost half the world’s population (3.4 bn. people) still struggle to meet basic needs; 46 % of the world’s population is living on less than $5.50 a day. As the racial and gender wealth gap also continues to increase, the world's richest 1 % own twice as much as the bottom 90 %. 2153 people own twice as much 6.9 bn. people.
