TATIANA KOCMUR & LIZA ŠIMENC:
MARY JANE
Splendour, inflated breasts, gilt, black leather, painted skin, intense colours, discharge from a dense mass of progressive deformation of idealism. Kitsch. Fetish. Ideal. When the limits of the anthropological are blurred and it seems that only artefact remains, one or two stretch marks nevertheless appear. A fairy-tale being or a creature of social expectations? A pulse is heard from the depths: infinitely cute, lovably hairy, seductive, too hot to handle, Mary Jane. Embodiment. Visual pleasure. Identification. What’s up patriarchy? Then: Self-reflection. The Mary Jane performance addresses the social perceptions of a woman’s body. It is a fantastic answer to the standardized, preconceived ideals, enforced by the advertising industry. It offers a discussion on social mechanisms which co-create, reproduce and control certain bodies. It presents a possibility for rebellion towards any attempt for normalization and categorisation. Direct entrance into objectification of bodies. But this is not an event, Mary Jane is a living sculpture in the process of its decomposition.
