NOÉ SOULIER:
PASSAGES
Through his exploration of choreography and dance in both performative and discursive settings, ranging from the black box to the museum to the written page, Noé Soulier’s artistic work resembles (or perhaps event presents) a formation of time-and-space specific language, a responsive language in movement. In Passages, he goes even further to act both on and with the spaces he and his crew come in touch with. Passages explore the relationship between the movement of bodies and the spaces in which they evolve. By acting on imaginary objects, the performers make the multiple dimensions of the places they inhabit resonate. Whether it’s a vault supported by pillars, a long corridor, or an immense lawn, the choreography is composed of modules designed to fit these different types of spaces. It can thus redeploy itself in a singular way according to the identity of each place. It requires neither stage, technique, nor musical equipment. It solely requires present bodies and the subtlety of their perception, imagination, and response to the environment in question.
