GUNDEGA REDERE:
IN HORIZON
To carry one’s weight. To carry the bones, the flesh, thought, impulses, desire, demands, sedimentation of memories, and imagination of possibilities, the weight of the self, the other, even the world, to carry it through and through with each move in time and space. Another possibility, one that is difficult to imagine in the era of neoliberalist glorification of individualization and atomization: to share this weight. Gundega Redere’s piece In Horizon draws this possibility nearer. This is an insight into the relentless, active, and fluid process of how giving a part of one's weight to another and taking part in one’s partner's weight creates a delicate shared balance. A seemingly simple, yet complex, mechanisms are at work here. The offering of one’s weight is a bold act, such that requires enormous trust in the other. And vice versa, there is a sense of responsibility in accepting this weight, adding it to one’s own, sharing it back, or even forward with someone else. All this while being put off balance – not in order to fall, but precisely to create balance.
